William Papworth (b. 1996, Somerset, England) is a ceramicist and photographer currently working in East Sussex. After completing a Foundation Course at Oxford Brookes, he studied Fine Art (BA Hons 1st class) at Kingston School of Art from 2016 to 2019. In his final year at university he sat for the first time at a potter’s wheel and has been hooked ever since.
Following graduation, William built himself a simple garden studio in East Sussex, where he makes his ceramics. So far, his work is entirely self-taught and he spends his time practicing, researching and learning more about the craft. Most of the ceramicist’s work is hand thrown on a potter’s wheel, creating one-off and repeated forms that reflect his appreciation of simple, ergonomic design.
Features like comfort and practicality are of fundamental importance; the way a mug feels in your hands means as much to William as how it looks. The various glazes he uses all share a natural and subdued palette. The subtle alchemy and huge diversity of organic materials present endless possibilities, and he has been developing an ongoing series of glaze recipes that explore beautiful and intriguing surfaces.
William is also a painter, musician and photographer.
