Greg Becker

Greg Becker (b. 1958, Nuneaton, England) left his home town of Nuneaton in 1977 firstly to study Graphics at Leeds University and then from 1980-83, Illustration at the Royal College of Art.

Picasso, Surrealism and German Expressionism were strong influences on Greg's early work. In 1996, he had a solo exhibition at London’s National Theatre of paintings and published illustrations which mingled the above influences with a more particularly British humour and quirkiness.

Since then Greg gradually moved away from the world of commissioned illustration to making paintings that reflect his immediate environment and personal experiences.

Greg likes to paint quiet scenes with an echo of a tranquil lost world in which ideally there is a suggestion of secrets yet to unfold. He tries to fuse this longing for an imaginary forgotten era into images inspired by his regular walks in South Downs in West Sussex or parks near to his home in South London.

The paintings and prints he produces now aim to create a peaceful, contemplative mood and are created in a wide range of media using memory, location drawing and photographs as reference.
