DESCRIPTION
"The Pictish Beast' is a representation of an animal depicted on many stone carvings dating from the Early Medieval Period belonging to a group of Scottish peoples known as The Picts. Some interpretations of the beast include a Dragon, a Dolphin, an Elephant or the mythical Kelpie (a shapeshifting spirit inhabiting Scottish Lochs). Despite us not knowing fully what the beast is, it accounts for 40% of the images of animals found in stone carvings from this period. This beast was one of great importance." - Leonie Cameron
